Start NowUnderstanding the job role in detail firstly it is important to understand the job role before preparing for the specific scenario questions. The interviewer asks this question related to the daily challenges and responsibilities of the job position the candidate is applying for. It is important to read the job description carefully in order to identify the key responsibilities related to your role. Also make sure to search for any required skills and qualifications needed for the job.
Also research about the company and industry in advance. If someone understands the company’s goals and values then they can answer the questions more better than the candidate who does not know anything. Also it is important to learn about the industry trends in challenges in order to answer according to the company’s rules. Another approach is that people can talk to professionals in the field to know about the industry better and if it is possible then they can connect with people who work in similar roles to ask about the challenges they face.
Also while answering it is important to think about your past experience to identify the similar task you have entered before and in order to reflect on how you solved the problems in the past jobs. If someone has a deep understanding of the role that they are applying for then they can also predict what kind of scenario questions can be asked in the interview.
One of the best ways to answer scenario questions is by using the star method. Star consists of the number one situation which describes the context of the problem, then the task which explains your role in the situation followed by the action which describes the issue. Lastly it explains the result which is the outcome of what you have learned.Â
Different types of scenario based questionsÂ
Typically the employers ask about the scenario based questions that are related to the category of the job and the specific role candidate is applying for. If someone is familiar with these types of questions then it is also easier for them to prepare in advance and answer them correctly.Â
Problem solving scenariosÂ
The first type of scenario based question is problem solvings scenarios and their use to test how a person can analyse a problem and then find the solution. For example, asking questions like what would you do if a customer complained about poor service? share your opinions.
Decision making scenarios
That by asking decision making scenario questions employees want to see how someone can make decisions while under pressure. These questions can be like choosing between the situations. For example you have to urgently ask yourself at the same time how do you prehorize and which one?
Conflict resolution scenariosÂ
The next type of scenario questions that I ask in the interview is conflict resolution and they are asked to test the ability of the candidate to maintain positive relationships at work. For example, employers can ask how to handle a disagreement with a coworker.
Handling pressure scenariosÂ
Handling pressure scenarios shows the ability of a person to stay in work efficiently under pressure and they are tested by asking questions like describing a time when you had to meet a tight deadline and how did you manage it?
Ethical dilemma scenariosÂ
The last type of scenario question can be about checking your integrity, your ability and in order to make the ethical decisions related to the work. It is important to answer correctly in order to show your understanding related to the job and prove yourself more desirable among others. These questions can be like what would you do if you saw a colleague doing something unethical?
Using the STAR method to answer the questionsÂ
Someone wants to give a well structured answer because it is easy for an interviewer to understand the response if the answer is clear and easily understandable. Handling pressure scenarios shows the ability of a person to stay in work efficiently under pressure and they are tested by asking questions like describing a time when you had to meet a tight deadline and how did you manage it?
One of the best ways to answer scenario questions is by using the star method. Star consists of the number one situation which describes the context of the problem, then the task which explains your role in the situation followed by the action which describes the issue full stop. Lastly it explains the result which is the outcome of what you have learned.Â
For example if a question is asked like how would you handle an angry customer? then by using the star method that answer can be given as, first of all, a situation which can be described as at my previous job. I had a customer that was upset because their online order was delayed and it was my responsibility to resolve their issue and to ensure that the customer is satisfied.
I listen to them and apologize for the delay and lastly check the status of their order. To make up for the delay I also offer them a discount on the next purchase. As a result of my efforts and decided to continue shopping with us. By using the star method the answers will be given as clear structured and also impactful.
