Firstly it is important to understand what are situational questions. Situational questions are like scenarios that are present to the candidate and they have to respond based on their experience and reasoning.
These questions are mainly used in job interviews so employers can see how the candidate is answering the question by using their problems solving skills, teamwork, leadership and decision making.
These questions also come in exams and assessments because teachers and examiners use these questions to test how students can solve questions by using their theoretical knowledge and can apply them to real life situations.
People can also face situational questions in daily life situations where someone can ask them in casual discussion debates or when giving advice to others. For example, situational questions can be like if a customer is unhappy with your service then how would you handle the situation? Or if you are working in a team project as a leader then how would you ensure that everyone is contributing equally?
How to Handle Situational Questions Effectively
Understanding the question properly
Firstly it is important to understand the question before answering it. It is important to identify what is the main issue or channel that is being asked in the question like what problems need to be solved. The next thing to identify is who are the people affected by the situation and what are the best results that are expected by the outcome.
For example if the question is someone has disagreement with the team member then how would you solve it? In this question firstly it is important to identify what is the main issue which is conflict with the team member.
The next thing to identify is the people affected and they are the first person you and the other team members could possibly affect the entire team. Last thing is the expected outcome which is to resolve the disagreement while maintaining teamwork and productivity in the company and without affecting others.

Using the STAR method
Someone wants to give a well structured answer because it is easy for an interviewer to understand the response if the answer is clear and easily understandable. Handling pressure scenarios shows the ability of a person to stay in work efficiently under pressure and they are tested by asking questions like describing a time when you had to meet a tight deadline and how did you manage it?
One of the best ways to answer scenario questions is by using the star method. Star consists of the number one situation which describes the context of the problem, then the task which explains your role in the situation followed by the action which describes the issue full stop. Lastly it explains the result which is the outcome of what you have learned.
For example if a question is asked like how would you handle an angry customer? then by using the star method that answer can be given as, first of all, a situation which can be described as at my previous job. I had a customer that was upset because their online order was delayed and it was my responsibility to resolve their issue and to ensure that the customer is satisfied.
I listen to them and apologize for the delay and lastly check the status of their order. To make up for the delay I also offer them a discount on the next purchase. As a result of my efforts and decided to continue shopping with us. By using the star method the answers will be given as clear structured and also impactful.
Stay calm and positive
Situational questions can have difficult or high pressure scenarios so it is important to stay calm and think logically before answering the question.
It is better for candidates to avoid emotional responses instead they can focus on finding a positive and professional solution.
For example the question is what would you do if a colleague took credit for the work you did? The wrong approach for answering this question is saying that I would confront them excessively and demand my recognition.
But the right approach is answering that I will first talk to them privately and politely to understand their point of view. If the issue is not resolved by this then I would politely bring this issue to my manager with the evidence of my contributions to solve it professionally.

Be honest but strategic
If any question in the situational question interviews the candidate about their mistake or failure then it is important to be honest.
But the main focus should be on what you have learnt from the experience and how you could improve yourself.
For example, the question is to tell me about the time you made a mistake at work. The good answer for this question is that I once told my client another deadline which caused them some delay.
